# 01 – Mr Floris says: “Spoil yourself” – April 2009.
Once a month I will be posting an entry like this one, where I pick something from a personal checklist. I hope the phrase does not just help me, but also you. I consider the personal checklist to be common sense.

Being conservative is a good quality, being rotten is a bad one, especially when you’re spoiled rotten. But try to find the middle ground. Being spoiled is something totally different than spoiling yourself; once in a while. If you are conservative and you want to enjoy your life, then spoiling yourself is a must. You will feel happy, as I have experienced myself, you value everything so much more.
Enjoying a hobby? Spoil yourself by getting that one thing you have been looking for, for so long. I have always been playing guitar, and I started with cheaper equipment. I spoil myself with good picks and quality strings and buying proper cleaning equipment. It will make me enjoy the hobby more, and it helps me appreciate it.
You have been working really hard? Spoil yourself with something that will make doing that work in the future a bit more comfortable or easier. I have been putting extra time into my graphic work. Seeing it being appreciated by people, I have spoiled myself investing into a Wacom tablet with a pen. Future work has been easier and more enjoyable. Which improved quality and helped me improve my skills and workflow.
Have you been going through a rough patch? Spoil yourself with free time. Make some time to go outside and sit in the sun, have a nice walk and enjoy the quiet park. I have noticed that enjoying even the littest of things have an effect on me in the long run.
And I hope you will also see that spoiling yourself by enjoying life, giving yourself a bit of ‘extra’, will help you appreciate what is around you. You will feel happier and more motivated to approach what’s in front of you.
Incidentally spoil yourself, spontaneously, and don’t be a spoiled person. It is now spring time, and I am writing this on my laptop in the nice sun on the balcony, having a cup of tea, and a sandwich for lunch. Taking my time. Listening to some nice music. And putting stress, work, health, and those sorts of things on hold. I feel I am spoiling myself. And I am telling myself I should do this more often. And despite things such as stress and daily tasks ahead of me, I feel tonight I can say it was a good day.
I am curious to hear from you if you think you are spoiled, or if you spoil yourself, how you are doing it. And if you are not spoiling yourself, I hope this entry will motivate you to do so. Because Mr F. says so
Because I’m not exactly wealthy or even financially stable, I can’t really spoil myself too often or in a big way. Nevertheless, I do treat myself in some of the ways you suggest. For instance, you say that if there’s something that makes working at something you love easier to get it, I have done that.
I am not in the movie business (yet), but I have always wanted to write a screenplay. If you have ever seen a real one (and not one included in a book along the lines of The Art of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith) you know that the formatting of one is tricky, with each of the various elements done in a particular fashion Now. if you are good with Word or any word processing program and know how to customize tab settings, it’s probably not hard to approximate screenplay format settings, but I’m not that gifted, so until I decided to splurge and buy a copy of Write Brothers’ Movie Magic Screenwriter, I had no way of making my dream of becoming a script writer true.
I can afford a few luxuries in life. I just buy myself artbooks from various Japanese artists when I have some money to spend. That may not seem like much, but some of these artists are amazing, and having high-resolution versions of their art is well worth the money.
Nice post. Lots of common sense as you tagged it, but for some reason common sense seems to be all to easy to forget. Spoiling yourself with tools to help you with a job or a hobby is probably the best advice I’ve seen or heard so far this year, and as you tagged it, common sense. Lots of things here worth remembering. Don’t think it matters if it’s something expensive or cheap, or even free, as long as you can get something good out of it!
Nice post and I’m looking forward to the next post!
For some reason, in this day and age, we forget to take care of ourselves. Your article hit home for me because my wife is constantly telling me to make some time for me instead of always being a worker, husband and father. She always tells me that I need some “me” time so I can recharge the batteries which is pretty much what you have said. The challenge for me is trying to find something that I can enjoy. I used to do a lot of fishing but the area I live has become crowded and it’s a challenge to find a quiet spot but I really do need to spoil myself every now and then. Thanks for the reminder.
I spoil myself from time to time, after years of going without I started to figure if I don’t take care of me who will? If I have something major completed I go out for a nice meal or buy myself something I love.
First of all, I have to say that I absolutely adore the photo of the dog. I’m a huge animal lover, and he or she is just so adorable! It made me smile, and that’s a big deal. I love the advice and message of this blog. It’s spot on!
I spoil myself when I have done something worth spoiling myself over. If I finally get a difficult asana perfected, I buy myself some new Yoga pants from either Gaiam or Victoria's Secret. If I've had a damn good semester, I treat myself to a holiday or a weekend at an arcade. Things like that. ^_^
