JTV Security Bulletin

Here is a short reminder and some tips about how to be smart about your JTV account.

a) Make sure your email address is valid, and up to date.

It’s quite important to use an email you have access to. So when you do get hacked you can restore your account quite easily.

b) Make sure you use a unique and strong password.

A unique password means that your myspace / facebook / justintv / blog / email / etc passwords are unique. So when they hack your justintv login they do not automatically have access to your myspace or your google/hotmail/yahoo webmail account, etc.

A strong password means it’s a pretty long password, which is hard to guess, and has multiple letters, numbers, and different characters.

monkey = matter of seconds to hack
m0nk11 = matter of minutes to hack
%m0nk-I1 = a good strong password

Try to use at least 6 characters - of course check what the options are for justintv

c) Be smart, and don’t disclose your privacy details.

- Do not mention your email address to people who are just nice to you, this includes your first and last name, the state or city you live in, what email provider you have, which passwords you’ve used in the past.

- Do rotate between passwords. Do you notice strange behaviour in your browser, myspace account, or notice bad users in your channel giving hints that they might hack you .. change your password! It’s that simple.

d) Take action now

- Go and check your profile on justintv, make sure your email is up date and change your password, and update your privacy details.

Why am I posting this?

1) Because people “CLAIM” to have been hacked (and evidence shows they were either lying or had a very easy to guess password)

2) Because I am getting an increased signal that more and more appear claim to be hacked. There are apparently users online who are here to cause harm. Prevent it happening to you!

A final tip!

If you get hacked, keep it quiet, don’t give attention to it publicly. In private contact the staff, and report it. Include any logs if you have with timestamps so they can check their server logs and find the abusive user. In the mean time try to restore your account, and of course follow the above guidance. Additionally .. just ASSUME they now are also after your other accounts, like mysapce and your email. So check your system for trojans, virusses, etc. And then when you feel confident, go change your email and hosting, and your myspace, etc passwords too.

Good luck everybody.
